JONG KONG

No. 402

Sir,

Colonial Office,

Downing Street, S.W.1.,

18th November, 1938.

106

I have the honour to refer to your despatch No.514 of the

27th of June regarding the report of the Hong Kong University (1937)

Committee.

2. I concur in your view that an independent visiting

commission to examine the problems in question is not a project which

needs to be pursued; and I desire to express by appreciation of

Mr. Sloss's energetic and tactful handling of the internal problems

of the University which he found awaiting him.

3. It appears to me, however, that when conditions in China

are less unsettled, the whole position of Hong Kong University in

relation to China and British policy in the Far East may need

careful review and that this may require the services of a specially

selected commission. But this is a matter for consideration in the

future.

4. I shall be obliged if you will forward to me thirty copies

of the report of the University (1937) Committee, as I should wish

to circulate the report to the members of the Advisory Committee on

Education in the Colonies for their information.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

humble servant,

(Sgd.) MALCOLM MacDONALD

GOVERNOR

SIR GEOFFRY NORTHCOTE, K.C.M.G.,

&C.,
